RECOGNIZING ROBERT R.
McMILLAN AND HIS CONTRIBUTIONS TO RELATIONS WITH PANAMA
HON. PETER T. KING
of New York
in the House of Representatives

Mr. King. Mr. Speaker, I rise today to
recognize the high priority that should be placed on improving our
relationship with Panama. Beyond the interest in the Panama Canal, where the
traffic destined to or from the United States amounts to some 65% of the
total tonnage, U.S. investment in Panama ranks third in Latin America.
Panama has many investment opportunities and is fast becoming a strong
tourist destination. Large numbers of Panamanians are fluent in English, and
the U.S. dollar is the official currency of the nation making Panama
attractive for private investments. It is extremely important, in the
interest of both the United States and Panama, to keep strong personal and
economic ties between the countries.
One Long Islander is trying to make a
difference in those relations. Robert R. McMillan has just been elected
Chairman of the United States-Panama Business Council—an organization
devoted to the continuance of close relations between our two nations. I
want to congratulate him on his election and wish him the best in his new
endeavors.

RECONOCE LA IMPORTANCIA DE LAS RELACIONES ENTRE PANAMA Y LOS ESTADOS UNIDOS
El Congresista del estado de New York
Peter King, reconoció recientemente en la Cámara de Respresentantes de los
Estados Unidos la prioridad que se le debe dar al mejoramiento de las
relaciones entre Estados Unidos y Panamá.
El Congresista, en su exhortación la cual
ha sido incluída en los archivos del Congreso en la página E1934 del 25 de
octubre del 2000, resaltó el hecho de que el 65% de la carga que pasa por
el Canal tiene como origen o destino a los Estados Unidos, y el alto nivel
de inversión norteamericana en Panamá, que ocupa el tercer lugar en Latino
América.
El Congresista elogió los esfuerzos de
Panamá por convertirse en un país de destino turístico, y el alto
porcentaje de la población que es bilingue, que sumado a otros factores
sugieren la importancia de mantener una relación fuerte tanto personal como
económica entre los dos países.
La reciente elección de Robert R.
McMillan, ex Presidente de la Junta Directiva de la Comisión del Canal de
Panamá, como Presidente de la Junta Directiva del Consejo Empresarial de
los Estados Unidos (USPA), fué ponderada positivamente por el Congresista
King.
