AMBASSADOR JUAN SOSA
President, US-Panama Business Council

Juan B. Sosa arrived in Washington, D.C. in October 1987 as Ambassador of Panama to the White House representing the Government of President Delvalle.  In February of 1988 he denounced Noriega's ousting of Delvalle and led a coalition of forces in the United States, in a fight to overthrow the dictatorial regime of Noriega.  He continued to be recognized by the United States as the legitimate Ambassador of Panama and served until August 1989 upon termination of President Delvalle's constitutional mandate.  In the ensuing months, Ambassador Sosa continued to be involved in the struggle against the dictatorship, a chapter that culminated in the ousting of Noriega by U.S. military forces in December 1989.  An account of this historic period has recently been documented in a book written by Ambassador Sosa entitled In Defiance.

Ambassador Sosa has been in the private sector since 1963, having worked for Colgate Palmolive Company at the beginning of his career as an international marketing executive, and since 1969 as Chairman of the Board of his own business and marketing consulting company specializing in market research, political polling, social forecasting, and media.  From 1970-'72 he was General Manager of Panama's Philip Morris licensee.  Between 1985 and 1989 he served as Chairman of the Board of Air Panama, the national airline, and between 1987 and 1989 as ex-officio Member of the Board of Directors of the Panama Canal Commission.

Ambassador Sosa has written numerous articles for magazines, newspapers, and periodicals, and has given lectures at several prestigious Universities, including Georgetown, Dartmouth, Carnegie-Mellon, St. Louis, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Virginia, Tufts' Fletcher School of Diplomacy, and others.  He has also acted as speaker for such prestigious organizations as: The National Press Club of Washington; American Newspapers Publishers Association; Americas Society; The World Affairs Councils of Los Angeles, Dallas, Maine, St. Louis and New Hampshire; Foreign Policy Association of New York; Council of the Americas, and civic organizations.

Ambassador Sosa has appeared as guest on numerous television programs, among others:  "This Week with David Brinkley," "Nightline," "Today Show," "Good Morning America," "McNeil Lehrer NewsHour," "Larry King Live," "McLaughin One on One," "CNN Newsmakers," Univision's "Temas y Debates," CBS' "This Morning," CNN Spanish "Choque de Opiniones" and the evening news at ABC, CBS, CNN and NBC.  At present he is a regular guest on talk shows dealing with hemispheric issues. In 1998 he was honored with the Hispanic Magazine’s Prestigious "U.S.-Latin American Friendship" award.

Conscious of his responsibilities to the community, he has served as President of the American Chamber of Commerce of Panama, Vice-President of the Board of Advisors of Nova University, and Chairman of International Relations of the Republican Party of Panama.   He also served for a number of years as Executive Vice President of the Greater Washington Ibero American Chamber of Commerce. At present Ambassador Sosa is President of Panamerica, a Washington-based marketing firm specialized in public policy and business development serving the U.S. market, and Latin America.  He also is President of the U.S.-Panama Business Council, a member of the Board of Governors of the City Club of Washington, board member of the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the U.S.-Mexico Chamber, and President and CEO and one of the founders of the Greater America Business Coalition.
